I know Ghajini is a hit - and I knew that even before it was released. I haven't seen the telugu one - but I have seen the original - Memento - and I loved it. It was dark, creative, something completely new. The movie basically moved in reverse. The audience actually felt the pain of a short term memory loss condition. And that is why, I didn't care whether it was a copy or not - I was just excited that the Indian audiences will be introduced to this great genre of movies, and since Aamir Khan was involved, I had my hopes up high about this movie.
It was none of that, and once again Indian audiences were robbed from experiencing a different kind of cinema, and instead got a masala version. Guys - you were copying a great concept - keep it original. Unfortunately, they copied it from the telugu remake instead of the original. Let me break it down.
First, the movie was supposed to be a dark one. Aamir Khan is a great actor, and we have seen numerous movies where he has played the good chocolaty character. This wasn't the movie where the director needed him to do that. All was needed was a vague memory of his romantic past. That's it. Noooo - but we have to have songs. With Aamir's unbuttoned shirt. We needed aamir to show his biceps rolling up his sleeves all the way up his arms. We had to go through the painful chatterbox of the actress. The whole movie digressed for about an hour and a half.
Now, for the action. Sorry but it was horrible - rajnikanth style - over the top action. But I will say - the movie has much bigger problems than this, and I am not going to waste much time on this.
It seems to me the director and Aamir as well only saw the telugu version, because I sincerely believe if Aamir had seen the original he would have gone for the darker, reverse narrative original. Too bad - this movie was a waste.
